Choosing a Surgical Implant Drape Pack

Date:2023-01-28
When it comes to choosing a surgical implant drape pack, there are a few options to choose from. These include single-use and reusable products. However, the choice depends on the surgeon and the type of surgical procedure performed. In general, a disposable gown is composed of nonwoven materials, while a reusable one is made of chemically treated fabrics.
Single-use adhesive incise drapes are made of plastic and can be impregnated with an antimicrobial agent. This may provide a barrier against SSI, though it does not reduce it. Several studies have compared these drapes to non-impregnated drapes.
The use of disposable drapes for SSI prevention is not justified, according to a Cochrane review. There is no benefit to the use of antimicrobial-impregnated drapes and no harm to the use of non-impregnated drapes.

Single-use drapes are convenient, but can be difficult to keep in position. Also, they generate additional clinical waste. A suitable alternative is a paper drape, although these can be expensive. They also need to be opened to be disinfected.
Reusable materials are generally made of polyester and knitted cotton. They are less expensive and are easier to work with. An advantage to these types of drapes is that they can be easily customized.
Disposable surgical gowns are typically made from natural or synthetic nonwoven materials. These gowns are used to prevent cross contamination, and thus maintain a clean environment during surgery. Their costs are lower than reusable gowns.
Surgical drapes are designed to limit contamination of surgical wounds, surgical instruments, and surgeons' hands. They are used during a variety of procedures, including dental implant surgery.
