Various disposable dental mirrors have been introduced in recent years. These mirrors are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. The most common sizes are 3/4 to 7/8 inches in diameter. They are typically small enough to be handheld and maneuvered in the mouth of a patient.
The mirror's reflecting surface can be a thin flat piece of rigid material or a metallized film. Both can be attached to a blade made from wood, plastic, or other materials. Wooden blades are preferred because they have been shown to be safe for use.
In some embodiments, the reflecting film is attached to the top surface of the blade. In other embodiments, the reflecting film is attached to a thin layer of plastic film on the top surface of the mirror. This allows for easier installation and removal.
The mirror's planar configuration is especially beneficial in air abrasive dentistry. The long length of the reflecting surface helps the dentist to more thoroughly examine the patient's oral cavity. This allows for less liquid and debris to be trapped in the mouth. The reflecting surface is also fog-resistant, which can be useful for certain dental procedures.
A variety of non-toxic adhesives can be used to adhere the mirror's reflecting film to the blade. Some adhesives are hot melt adhesives, while others are ethyl vinyl acetate. The film is typically 0.080 to 0.090 inches thick.
The mirror can be easily and inexpensively manufactured in large quantities. The plastic handle can be made in large quantities by injection molding.
